Long term causes:
- the population increased greatly as people from the countryside were migrating into the cities
- there was insufficient jobs
- 100,000 was the population in Berlin
- a decline in death rate was most likely the cause of increased population as well
- people who lived in rented properties on farms complained that the rent was very high
- men, women and children worked 13 hours a day on pay that wasn't particularly great
