Long term causes:

  • the population increased greatly as people from the countryside were migrating into the cities
  • there was insufficient jobs
  • 100,000 was the population in Berlin
  • a decline in death rate was most likely the cause of increased population as well
  • people who lived in rented properties on farms complained that the rent was very high
  • men, women and children worked 13 hours a day on pay that wasn't particularly great
