Hot rocks

Heat from inside the Earth is called geothermal and is produced by the radioactive decay (radioactive elements that release particles from their nuclei and give off heat) of certain elements, such as uranium and thorium in the core and mantle.

Convection currents in the mantle are strong enough to move tectonic plates but these move very slowly. Radioactivity is the engine of these currents.
