Demographic Transition Model


Stage 1:

  • high death rate and birth rate
  • no countries in this stage but maybe some Brasilian tribes are

Stage 2

  • death rates fall
  • birth rates remain high
  • example = Peru, BR is 20, DR is 5
  • medical/social breakthrough e.g. new hospitals reduces death rate
  • or improvements to water, food, accommodation
  • culture and religion dictate the birth rate
  • limited family planning and women have a submissive role

Stage 3

  • birth rate falls rapidly
  • low death…
