Structure

A synapse is made of a pre-synaptic neurone. The axon of this neruone is called the synaptic knob and contains many mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. In this knob, neurotransmitters are produced and stored in synaptic vesicles. There is then a gap between this and the post synaptic neurone called the synaptic cleft.
