1. Water and Carbon cycles as a natural system

Systems in physical geography

A model - idealised representation of reality

A system - interrelated events or components working together (consists of inputs, stores and outputs, with a series of flows or connections between them)

  • Isolated System - things outside the system do not affects the inputs, outputs or stores of the system. (No input or output of energy or matter) E.G. Universe
  • Closed System - Energy can be transfered in and out of a system but matter cannot E.G. The World
  • Open System- Energy and matter can be transfered in and out of the system E.G. Ecosystems
  • Subsystem - A component of a larger system. The Earth system has 5 subsystems, all of them are open systems
