Explain why USSR changed lives in Germany

  • Psychologically and physically
  • People had been expecting closer relations
  • Fighting on two fronts
  • Increased hardship
  • Hitler made mistakes - troops sent without proper clothing/prop could not disguise morale decline
  • Stalingrad
  • By 1941 it was clear that Blitzkrieg had failed
  • Treatment of German POWS (Prisoners of war)

Explain why Nazis had to ration food 39

  • German economy not fully prepared for war
  • Nazi economy not really ready for major war as result had to ration food + basics e.g. food, clothes, clothes, toilet paper
  • Much of pop. in war related industries - pressures resulting from premature outbreak of war create probs as many major projects involving rearmament not ready in 39
  • Much farmland used to build fortifications + airfields + had an impact of food production
  • Nazi agricultural policies not popular in 30's, many comtinued to migrate to towns in search of better work, some cases Labour shortages
  • Confusion in Nazi leadership between ST needs and LT plans
  • Series of different economic organisations functioned in their own way, often creating chaos
  • Huge drive towards rearmament pressure food production
  • Intro rationing meant everyone received fair share of food + morale maintained. During war was difficult for Germany to gain food imports
  • Four Year Plan from 36 not fully successful in creating economic self-suffciency

Why Goebbels declared 'Total War' 1943

  • Stalingrad meant need to recapture initiative, regime stated defeat would not occur and only admitted in final hour
  • Goebbels needed to motivate G people as gvt feared hostile reaction to war
  • Nazi gvt feared revolt amongst G people as SD reports showed decline in morale
  • Goebbels needed to get G people to accept greater control + sacrifice. Working hours increase + from Jan 43 women conscripted into factories
  • War no longer one of conquest but survival and little option but to support war effort. Fear Soviet Union would seek revenge on G
  • Allied bombings taken toll by 43 w/ high no. casualties + deaths. Thousands of homes destroyed/damaged + industry + war production had been severly affected
