The New Policy

  • Worsened US relations with Japan
  • Policy turned away from Dollar Diplomacy (Adopted by Taft in 1909)
  • Took a more peaceful approach to foreign affairs

  • Diplomatic Recognition was given to the New Chinese regime that  gained power after the revoloution

  • USA Followed an interventionist policy in Mexico: Violence there threatened American business
  • In April 1914 President Wilson sent US Marines to occupy Vera Cruz in an attempt to "Restore order" & overthrow dictator Victoriano Huerta, but occupation only strengthened Huerta's position
  • Anti-Imperialists criticized Wilson for intervening AT ALL.
  • T. Roosevelt and Cabot Lodge said WIlsonwas not tough enough
