Why did populism fail in the 1870's

Chigrin Affair of 1876; populists told Ukrainian peasants to revolt against their land owners which was a complete disaster. This created a distance which was never mended.

Populists were educated, peasants were not; there was a barrier

1875-1876: the party splintered for there was too much choice 

Appeared out of touch although they were trying to help 

Corrupted; some were loyal to the Tsar when they were trying to overthrow the regime 

Government action by Alexander III was tough wuth arrests by the Okhrana
