What Genesis teaches about creation?

Genesis Chapter 1

Begins: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” 

And each day God creates one aspect of the world.

Day 1- Night and Day

Day 2- Sea and Earth

Day 3 - Land produce vegetation

Day 4- Sky; morning and evening

Day 5- Water teem with living creatures and birds in the sky

Day 6- Land produce living creatures; and mankind in our image and likeness to  rule over all creatures

Day 7- Work was complete; blessed this day and rested

Genesis Chapter 2

Begins: “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.”

God commanded streams and water to surface on the land.

God breathed life into the dust of the ground and formed man.

God planed the Garden of Eden, and in it he grew vegetation and the tree of knowledge

God commanded Adam to work and care for the Garden and to avoid the tree of knowledge

God formed from the ground the animals and birds

God sent Adam into a deep sleep and removed one of his ribs and created woman from the rib, a companion for Adam

Key Concepts - Gen 1

  • Creationism- Literalists believe in the exact seven days of creation.
  • Provides an explanation for the order of creation, culminating with mankind and ending with the sabbath.
  • Includes hints as to the nature and characteristics of God due to 1:27 “made in our image and likeness” and 1:15 commanding Adam to care for creation.

Key Concepts - Gen 2

  • A more conceptual view of creation- Liberalists form beliefs about Genesis as a metaphorical explanation of creation.
  • Provides an explanation for the creation of the sexes within mankind.
  • Includes hints about the treatment of creation.
