Weight, Mass and Gravity

Gravitational Force = force of attraction between all masses

2 important effects: - it makes all things accelerate towards the ground on surface of the Earth                                    - gives everything weight

Weight and Mass are NOT the same thing:

Mass = amount of stuff in an object

Weight = caused by pull of gravitational force

An object has the same mass anywhere, BUT its weight will be different in other surroundings

The weight of the object depends on its gravitational force

Weight is a force measured in Newtons

Mass in NOT a force , measured in kg

On the Earth: gravitational field strength = 10N   On the moon: gravitational field strength = 1.6N

W = m x g         Weight, N = mass, kg x gravitational field strength
