www (aka) World Wide Web

This is the collection of information on computers that are connected to the internet and that is made available for anyone to acess.

 Features include:

  • written using HTML
  • viewed using a web browser
  • contains hyperlinks to other web pages
  • use HTTP to send pages accross the internet

The WWW could be described as a multimedia service on the internet.

The internet

aka "the net". This is a world wide communication system which links computers from all over the world using a variety of telecommunication links such as satellites.

URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

This is a web adress which adresses a website on the internet.

HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol)

This is an application protocol used on the WWW.

It defines how data is structured and transmitted and specifies how browsers and web servers should act in response to requests.

IP Adress

Internet Protocol address. This represents a standard set of rules used to ensure the

proper transfer of information between computers on the Internet.

Every device linked to a network and is identified by a unique IP address.

The IP address allows messages and data to be routed to the correct address on the network.

IPv4 addresses consist of four numbers separated with a dot(.).

IP addresses can be:

Static – a permanent IP address that does not change.

Dynamic – temporary addresses that are assigned each time a computer accesses the

Internet.

Web Browser

This software allows users to view and use webpages on the internet.

 It is responsible for getting text and graohics etc. from servers on the internet, and assembling them for display, usually in HTML format.

Web browsers can be used to view any html web pages whether users are online or offline.

web server

  • a computer designed to deliver internet web pages across the internet or within an intranet.
  • processes requests for informatin that coomes from the internet.
  • contains application software to enable the transmission of content and makes use of client-server technology

web hosting

this provides individuals or organisations with access to a web server and a web space to store a website or web pages.

FTP- File transfer protocol

used to transfer files across the internet between client and server devices.

ISP- internet service provider e.g. BT

  • direct links to te internet and accepts transmission from users over communication lines and pases these onto the internet.
  • ISP sells internet access to individuals or companies.

ISP's typically provide

  • variety of bandwith options
  • email service
  • security features
  • web hosting services
  • customer support
  • website filtering
  • telephone/ digital tv package

Search engine

  • a web based tool that searches for information using key words or criteria.
  • meta tags can be used to specify key words in the heading of the HTML page.
  • these help searchh engins categorise web pages and decide whether to show them as part of the results.

cache

  • cache or temporary internet files allow browsers to download website images, data and documents for faster viewing in the future.
  • a local copy of the information is kept.
  • this means you can load some of the information from each page without downloading the whole page.
  • this will decrease the time it takes to load a wbepage.

cookies

  • small files are downloaded to a computer when visiting a website.
  • they can store previous activity on that site and users preferemces.
  • cookies can also be used to track a users browser history.
  • users are generally asked to accept the cookies.

portal

  • a website that acts as a main entry point to a group of web services.
  • e.g. Yahoo.

website

a website is a collection of HTML pages linked together on the world wide web.

web page

a page of information stored on the world wide web.

features of these pages include:

  • written using HTML
  • viewed using a web browser
  • contain HYPERTEXT which provides clickable links to other pages.
  • can contain sound, video, text etc.

  • ITU (internation telecommunication union) is a world wide organisation.
  • it requaltes the use f radio spectrum throughout the world.
  • it assigns communication satelite orbits.
  • it develops standards relating to network technology which enables interconnection all around the world.
  • also it improves interconnectivity between countries across the world.

  • 95% of the international internet traffic is carried on submarine fibre cables built sing ITU standards.
  • ITU-T standards are used for broadband subscriptions.

  • ITU studies the cost of internet connectivity and its impact on the economy.

describe the role of the W3C?

the W3c develops standards of the world wide web. for example languages for web design such as HTML/CSS.
