Internet
The internet is a global communications system which links computers together which are in different locations.
It is a fast way to communicate between computers and devices
Any computer can be linked to any other computer attached to the internet
World Wide Web
The WWW is a collection of information that is connected to the internet.
The information is held in multimedia form and is stored in locations called websites in the form of web pages.
Universal Resource Locator
A URL is a unique address for referring to resources on the internet
Its rare when you have to right out a url in full as protocols are used to help find the website you are looking for.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol
HTTP is a protocol that processes the identifaction, requesting, and transferring multimedia web pages over the internet
IP Address
Every computer linked to the internet has a an address known as an IP Address.
The IP address gives each computer a unique code which it is identified to for example- 158.152.1.58
Web Browser
A web browser is the application running on a users computer that is responsible for displaying webpages from servers on the internet
There are many different browsers but they all have bookmarks, favorites, and history option.
Web Server
A web server provides internet pages for other computers through the internet.
They cache websites which have been previewed, meaning that they can be found later without any delay
Web Hosting
Web hosting is a type of internet hosting service that allows indiduals and organisations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web
File Transfer Protocol
FTP is the most common protocol for the movement of files across the internet.
Users can access a server holding the required file and request that it be downloaded to them.
Internet Serive Provider
ISP is an organisation that has direct links to the internet and accepts tranmissons from users over dial-up or broadband connections, and passes these onto the internet for example BT or SKY
Search Engine
A search engine is an application accessed over the internet that maintains the indexes of webpages.
Users wanting information on a particular topic will acess the search engine using the internet and submit a topic or list of topics
Cache
A cache is a store of recently accessed webpages and the images they contain.
If a user wants to revisit a webpage it is not practical too reuse the internet, so instead its in a cache.
Cookies
Cookies are small files placed on the hard drive of a users computer by a webpage that he or she has visited.
The cookies take track of the amount of times the users visits site and builds a picture of what th euser is interested in.
Portal
A portal is a website designed to be the one that a user will want to visit first when accessing the web.
This is an advantage as you can customise your portal page making it much faster to access the facilities you check daily for example the news.
Website
A website is a collection of webpages at the same domain, often with a common theme.
They are usually maintained by a single individual or organisation.
Hyberlinks are used to move between pages.
Webpage
A webpage is a document accessed in a browser.
Generally they contain text and images and maybe some audio or videos.
Other than text, the other elements arent stored on the webpage but are loaded into the page by the users browser located by the URI(Uniform Resource Indentifier)
Large videos or audio files may be streamed to help the speed of the webpage
