Weaning - gradual introduction to solid foods

- Suitable foods: cereal, pureed fruit and vegetables

- No salt or sugar!

- Can cause dehydration and kidney problems.

- Tooth decay or obesity.

- Babies will usually be weaned between 4-6 months.

- Before this, milk is best for your babies nutrients.

- The babies kidney and digestive system is not developed to take solids.

- More iron needs to be introduced when on solids.

How to introduce solid foods.

- Slowly, in small amounts, use the tip of your clean finger, keep calm if baby refuses food.

- Offer half a bottle of milk, then offer solids after, offer solids throughout the day.

- Be patient, talk , smile and encourage the baby.

- Hold baby in arms when offering solids.

- Make sure initial food is not lumpy.

- Do not add extra salt or sugar to babies food.

Why a child may refuse food.

- Children like to be the centre of attention and often like to test parents.

- Often go through a non co-operative stage.

- Appetites and excersice can vary.

- May not be hungry.

- May not like thet taste.

- May become bored.

- Baby had too many snacks.

- Could be ill.

How to avoid problems.

- Avoid confrontation.

- Never force a child.

- Make mealtimes fun and pleasant.

- Make food attractive and easy to eat.

- Serve small portions.

- Introduce new flavours gradually.

- Avoid snacks.

- Allow plenty of time.

- As child gets older allow them to help with the preparation of the food.
