The Reasons for Early American involvement in Viet
American felt after second World war Communism would affect America's well being and security. Truman was newly elected and wanted to prove decisive and tough in foreign policy.
Truman got involved because: Us wanted trade with South East Asia, Fought against Communsim spreading (containment), McCarthy whipped Americans into anti - communism frenzy, Truman 'lost' China, Ho Chi Minh communist (USSR's puppet.)
1954 America seemed more convinced by the importance of communism in Vietnam spesning millions. Main motivation for Truman to be involved in the Cold War is idea of Containment and holding the line against communist advance.
Vietnam was was a result of contianment policy. Want an American war in Truman's years.
1954 - Eisenhower declined US military intervention to help French at DiemBienPhu. Made the Domino Theory. Geneva Conference "Vietnam temporarily divided".
Giap and Ho declared War against France. Gathered Hearts and minds of the people by promising to be polite; be fair; dont steal; do not bully; dont cause damage.
Recognition by China. Could have Sanctuary if in trouble in Vietnam.
As Giap went from strength to strength France had issues.
French failure as peasants brough guns onto the hills surrounding Diem Bien Phu. Blew them out of Vietnam.
Why French failed in Vietnam: Ho and Giap won hearts and minds, Brilliant leader Ho Chi Minh, Brilliant commander Giap, Chinese aid.
Finally ended three years of fighting in Korea wanted to end the fighting in indochina also.
Geneva: Ho and Giap wanted as much of Vietnam back as possible getting foreigners out. French wanted out but keepign some importance in South East Asia. America wanting to contain communism.
Vietnam split in two Diem one hlaf Ho Chi Minh other half. National elections were promised in 1956 didnt happen.
