  • He is the guide for the reader as we share his thoughts and feelings and experiences.
  • he adds suspense as he has many unanswered questions
  • we see how important reputation is through the way he behaves.
  • he is involved in the story line and plot as he acts as a detective.
  • He is an example of a perfect victorian gentleman and shows an ideal society.

quotes to show that Utterson acts as a detective

- chapter 1 - " and you never asked about the place with the door?" this shows that Utterson is curious about Hyde and is immediatley interested to know more about him.

- 'friend and benefator edward hyde' - this is when Utterson goes through Jekyll's will to look for more information.

Utterson and secrecy

-Utterson doesnt like secrecy as he is worried about Jekyll and when he finds Jekyll's will 'it offended him' - Utterson is offended that Jekyll won't tell him the truth.

-He is respectful of the other men's reputations as he mentions that Jekyll was "wild when he was younger" but never actually mentions what Jekyll did in the past.- chapter 2

-chapter 1 - 'let us make a bargain never to refer to this again" - Utterson and Enfield creating a secret they regret that they have been gossiping.

-chapter 2- he has a 'concealed disgrace'- this shows that he has done things that he isnt willing to discuss.

Utterson - victorian gentleman

-chapter 4- when identifying carews body he is respectful as he says "i am sorry to say"

-he keeps his desires hidden and is restrictive with himself.

-"ashamed of my long tongue" - he doesn't want to be a gossip

Utterson- involvement in the plot

- He reacts negatively to 'the incident at the window' which builds suspense.

- he gets involved in somebody else's story which is ironic as he doesn't like to gossip.

Utterson - guide for the reader

- he gives a strong negative reaction to Hyde so the reader also feels this towards Hyde.

-He believes that Jekyll is being blackmailed

-he is a reliable source of information

- he has a biased view as none of his question are answered until the end.

- he is good at discovering information

-he goes back and reads Jekyll's will and 'studies its contents'

-he has a good memory which allows him to piece together information

he is always asking questions as he asks Poole to "be explicit, what is it you are afraid of?"
