BEDZED (Beddington Zero Energy Development) is a carbon-neutral eco-community.
It gets its energy and resources like so;
- buildings face south to get maximum benefit from sunlight
- double glazing and high levels of insulation reduce heat loss
- the timber it was built with came from sustainable forests
- small power plant (fuelled by tree waste) is used to provide hot water
- solar power provides electricity
- all heat used is recycled
- buildings have low energy appliances
- rainwater store
- wind driven ventilation
