Types of atomic bonding

?

Covalent bonding

- Occurs between non-metals

- atoms will share electrons on the outer shell

Ionic bonding

- Occurs between metals and non-metals

- the element with more electrons on the outer shell will take from the other to complete this shell

- both atoms are now ions

- the ion that lost electrons becomes positive

- whilst the ion that gained electrons will become negative

- this reaction happens betwen the group 1 and 7 metals to create salts

Metallic bonding

- Happens between metals

- bonded in a reaction by attractive forces

- have a sea of free moving negative electrons between the positive ions

- free moving electrons mean the metal is very conductive
