  • Great Sumatra Andaman Earthquake 9.1 in the sunda trench on the SW coast of Indonesia
  • Subduction zone - Indo Australian plate is subducting under the Burma Plate
  • epi centre 160km of shore and focus is 30km below sea level
  • fault stike slip fault occured for 15-20m along a 1600km fault line
  • Veritcal mostion of the plate lifed the water displaced milions of tonnes of water creating waves 30m high

  • Hit sumatra, Indonesia hit with 30m waves, then hit Thailand 45 mins later

Managment of the Tsuami

Problems in distrubuting aid - £4 billion had not been delived to Sri Lanka

Ocean Tsumai system installed but would have not been of help to Sumatra due to the close promxity
