Tropical Rainforests

?

Characteristics of the Rainforest

Climate:
No definite seasons
It is very hot temperature between 20-28 degrees Celsius as it is near the equator.
Rainfall is very high at 2000mm per year.
Rains everyday usually in the afternoon.

Soil:
Is not fertile as the heavy rain washes nutrients away.
They are nutrients at the surface but the layer is thin so it decays very fast due to the warm conditions.

Plants:
Trees are evergreen to take advantage of the continual growing season.
Trees are really tall and the vegetation cover is dense-little light reaches the floor.

Animals:
Contain more animals than any other ecosystem.
Eg Gorillas,Jaguars,Tree Frogs
Animals are brightly coloured and make lots of noise

People:
Home to the Maisin Tribe
They make a living by hunting and fishing, gathering nuts and berries, and growing vegetables in small garden plots.

Interdependent Ecosystems

All the parts of the rainforest are dependent on each other.

The warm and wet climate means that dead plant material is decomposed quickly by fungi and bacteria on the forest fooor. This makes the surface of the soil high in nutrients meaning plants grow quicker and easier.

Plants pass on their nutrients to animals. Plants and animals have a symbiotic relationship(rely on each other)

Changes to the rainforest e.g. deforestation can have knock on effects on the environment

Trees also intercept and take up lots of water and release it back into the atmosphere as moisture for further rainfall.
