Continuity

  • Herbal remidies were still used, remidies were chosen by their colours
  • Bleeding, purging and sweating were used to rebalance humours

Change

  • New plants were brought back from the New World (America) e.g. Ipecac (used in treating dysentery) and Chinchoa (used to treat malaria)
  • A new science (known as iatrochemistry or medical chemistry) was extremely popular
  • Idea of transference - an illness or disease that could be transferred to something else - soem pople used to sleep with sheep in their bedrooms, hoping that their fever would transfer to the animal
  • Alchemy meant that people began to look for chemical cures to disease - metals were used to cure ailments
