- High proportion of people work in the urban areas of the country but live in rural or suburban areas. These people make regular journeys to and from their homes by road and rail.
- Many commuter journeys are now between 1 suburb and another , rather than from suburb to town centre.
- Most public transport systemems were developed for travel from suburb to town centre not across town. Suburb to suburb journerys therefore have to be made by private ca, resulting in congestion of suburban roads.
- Expensive to expand public tranpsort networks to keep [ace with suburbanisation and counter-urbanisation. Car continues to be more convenient.

- No of cars increases, so does te no of journeys that people make in them, Corresponding fall in the use of public transport.
- Research in USA suggest that not only does the no of journeys increase with the car ownership but so does the distance travelled. Many of these extra journeys are for leisure purposes.
