What are Transition Metals

  • The transition metals sit in the middle of the periodic table
  • A lot of everyday metals are transition metals e.g. copper, iron, zinc, gold, silver, platinum

Properties of Transition Metals

  • Transition metals have typical metallic properties
  • Hard and Strong
  • Conduct heat and electricity
  • High melting points (except mercury, liquid at room temp)
  • High Densities
  • Relatively Unreactive

Transition Metals and Their Compounds

  • Transition Metals and their compounds make good catalysts
  • Iron is the catalyst used in the Haber process for making ammonia
  • Vanadium pentoxide is the catalyst for making sulfuric acid in the Contact Process
  • Transition metals often have more than one Ion e.g. Fe2+, Fe3+, Cu+, Cu2+
  • The compounds of transition elements are very colourful
  • The colour they are depends on the ion they contain
  • Fe2+ ions are usually light green
  • Fe3+ ions are orange/brown
  • Cu2+ ions are often blue
