To what extent was the NEP good for Russia

?

Evidence that the NEP was good for Russia...

-Gave peasants an incentive to produce more crops. Led to massive increase in food production. For example, between 1921 and 1924, grain production increased by 14 million tonnes per year.

-Led to development of more vibrant culture in Russia, people opening more shops and resturants and making a profit.

-Brought about political stability as less peasant uprisings and strikes by industrial workers in the countryside.

-Gave an opportunity for economic freedom, allowing people to start up businesses and make a profit.

-More goods became available on the market.

-Resolved many problems revolving around Russian infrastructure. By 1926, water and electricity were more reliable than they were prior to the First World War.

-Ideological success as brought about economic stability, etc..

Evidence that the NEP had a negative impact on Rus

-Agricultural production increased to the point where there was more supply than demand which mean peasants were not selling their produce and still living in abject poverty.

-Did not increase industrial production, meant prices of these products still and very much unafforadable for ordinary Russians.

-Although NEP granted economic freedoms, it was also accompanied by tightening of politcal authority, for example by 1924, Bolsheviks had taken control of all trade unions and introduced tight censorship. Country governed by the Politburo which consisted of 7 members.

-Could be considered an ideological failure.

-Caused divisions within the party.
