Making a Standard Solution

A standard solution is a solution of known concentration

  • Find how much solute you need using:
    • concentration x volume/dm^3 (to find moles)
    • moles x molar mass (to find grams)
  • Weigh solid in a weighing boat then transfer to a beaker, rinsing the weighing boat into the beaker with distilled water
  • Dissolve the solid with distilled water
  • Transfer the solution from the beaker to a volumetric flask, rinsing out the beaker and the stirring rod into the flask with distilled water
  • Top up the volumetric flask with distilled water, until the bottom of the meniscus is at the line (use a dropping pipette near the end
  • Shake the flask to get a homogenous solution
