Tehran Conference

Who was there?

US President Roosevelt, UK Prime Minister Churchill, and USSR's Stalin.

When was it?

It was late November till early december in 1943.

  • D-day was co-ordinated with a soviet offense.
  • Possibility of USSR opening a front on Japan.
  • New international organisation to keep peace - the UN.
  • USSR to have a sphere of influence.

  • Future of Germany was undecided: USSR wanted to punish harshly, US/UK didn't.

Yalta Conference

Who was there?

US President Roosevelt, UK Prime Minister Churchill, and USSR's Stalin.

When was it?

February 1945.

Key positives from the conference:

  • Stalin would open a second front on Japan.
  • Germany would be divided into three zones.
  • Countries liberated from Nazi's would hold free elections.

Key negatives from the conference:

  • Stalin wanted the border of USSR to move west into germany; other two didn't agree.

Potsdam Conference

Who was there?

US President Truman, UK Prime Minister Atlee, and USSR's Stalin.

When was it?

May 1945, after the Nuclear detonation in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

Key positives from the conference:

  • Germany + Berlin divided into 4 zones.
  • Allowed to take reperations from their own zones.
  • Germany reduced in size.

Key negatives from the conference:

  • Extra zone of Germany granted to France; USSR thought it was undeserved.
  • USSR wanted more reperations.
  • Truman was getting too big for his boots because of the successful Nuclear detonation.
  • Stalin said the Polish government would have free elections - which it didn't.
