What is its role?

It is the watchdog of the US constitutuon and part of 'checks and balances'. It is the highest court of appeal 

Why would the president fear it?

They can declare laws and acts unconsitutional

How are they appointed?

They are nominated by the president and agreed by the senate, they stay in office until they resign or get impeached 

The Supreme Court is highly respected by the American people

It is made of people from various parties and backgrounds which means they can often disagree with the president

Roosevelt started to meddle in  the Supreme Court 

By 1935 he did not like them as they declared acts unconstitutional.
