the sanctity of life
christians believe in sanctity of life- that human life is sacred.
"all human life is sacred" pope paul VI
"all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights" univerasal declaration of human rights artical 1.
"everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person" univeral declaration of human right artical 3.
"so God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created; male and female he created tem" Genesis 1:27
abortion
abortion law- two doctors have to agree, the point of viabillity, and continuing the pregnancy would be a greater risk to the mother's future ability to have children.
abortion is either medically (drugs) or surgically carried out- abortion pill, morning after pill, vacuum aspiration, and partial birth.
reasons for abortion- as a result of a casual sex encounter, interfere with the career or lifestyle of a person, result of or incest, and mother's life is threatned by a medical condition.
christians believe that life begins at conception however abortion is available up to the 24 week of pregnancy.
"before i was born the lord called me" Isaiah 49:1
pro-life and pro-choice
pro-choice= argue in favour of legalised abortion
- the right to chose- woome have the right to choose what happens to their body
- unsafe abortions- without legalised abortion there would be a rise in unsafe backstreet abortions which can lead to death.
- mother incapable- women may be unable to phisically or mentally carry out a pregnancy
- mother's life- life and health of the women is threatened by the pregnancy
- compassionate killing- disabled embryo will not survive long outside the womb rather then put them and the mother through child birth and the sad decline to death.
- women in hardship- poor mother unable to support the child and the family
- freedom of will- christians believe that humans are given free will by God to make their own moral decisions.
pro-life= opponents of abortion
- every human being has the right to life -'you shall not murder'
- human life is sacred- from the moment of conception
- the embryo can feel pain during an abortion and suffers
alternatives to abortion
many christians argue that more can be done to support single mother
- direct social and financial suppoer drom chirch communitites
- provide suppoert for teenegers where there are family difficultes
- accepting and welcoming single mothers into the church fully
- fostering provided temporaily if the mother is unable to care for the child at the time
- adoption if the mother cannot care for the child
euthanasia
Many people suffer at the end of their lives.Euthanasia is the act of killing someone painlessely especially to relieve suffering from an incurable illness.People may want euthanasia because of the loss of quality of life.
In the UK before the suicide act 1961 it was a crime to commite a faital attempt could lead to prosecution and imprisonment.Euthanasia is still against the law in the UK and in most parts of the world. The UK law allows the doctor to:
- give a powerful painkiller to a terminally ill patient
- withdraw medical treatment if they judge that recovery is not possible
voluntary and non voluntary euthanasia
Voluntary euthanasia- when a person wishes to die and ask for help in doing so. This help may include provinding medicines or lethal injections to make sure it is done quickly and painlessly.
- 'do not murder'
- jesus brought healing and life to people not death
- christians accept that suffering is part of what it is to be a follower of christ
Involuntary euthanasia- when a person's wishes cannot be given for some reason a decision or express an opinion someone else decides to end a life for that person.
- involves the removal of water or food some christians argue that this is the same as killing.
- may lead to the killing of a person agaist their own will for some social or medical justification.
active and passive euthanasia
active euthanasia- something is actively done to end a person's life
passive euthanasia- where something that could be done to prolong life this hastens a person's death
interests of others- the morality of euthanasia is not restricted to the wishes of the suffering person but those involved in the situation.
the morality of action and interaction- christians recognise that moral behaviour is not just about what we do but also what we do not do.
limits of mercy- mant cgristians believe that there can be a point where any further attempts at treating a sick person do more harm then good. christians believe that in some cases giving appropriate painkillers can hasten death. here the double effect rule allows a person to be given strong painkillers because the intention is to relieve pain.
quality of life, self-determination and hospice
Quality of life- human beings do not have the same quality of life. Many people live in poverty and hardshipmany are disabled. Elderly people sometimes lose many of their phsical and mental abilities.
Self-determination- ability to decide the future is part of being free.
The hospice is a place where expert pain and symptoms relief is combined with all round care,to meet the physical, social, psychological and spiritual needs of patients, their family and friends.
Christians responce to the terminally ill then euthanasia-
- compassionate care and pain relief
- healing if not phisical then spiritual
- valuing the person and every moment of thier life
