The Location and Importance of the City

London is located in south-east England on the river Thames. 

London is important regionally because:  Salaries are 56% higher in London than anywhere else in the UK so lots of internal migrants are attracted to the area.

London is important nationally because: It has a population of 8.6 million which means it contains 13% of the UK’s population. This means that it brings in more taxes than anywhere else and it also needs more spending than any other area.

London has 7.5% unemployment which is higher than anywhere else in the country. This means that the government has to spend more on benefits than anywhere else in the country.

London has a population which is 37% ethnic minorities so it encourages international migration and integration. This also provides opportunities such as Brick Lane in Shoreditch.
