Location and Reasons for Cliff Collapse

Location: Coastal Village in Hampshire, South England.

Reasons for Cliff Collapse: - South-West winds with a 3000 mile fetch attack the base of the cliffs by hydraulic power and abrasion.

- Sub-aerial processes, like weathering, weaken the rock, and then mass movement, such as slumping and rock fall, lead to collapse.

- Permeable sands lie on top of impermeable clay, so that when heavy rainfall collects, it makes the sand too heavy causing collapse.

- Extensive building on the cliff increases the weight on the soft ground causing collapse.

- Large groynes have prevented sediment from reaching the bays promting more erosion.
