The cholera-phobia riots

  • 30 recorded riots in Britain
  • Liverpool: 29th May and 8th June 1832, 8 street riots against the local medical men
  • it was a generally held belief that cholera victims were murdered by doctors for dissection
  • grave-robbing was common

The goverment's reaction

  • sent two medical commissioners to St.Petersburg, Russia, where there had been an outbreak. Resulted in a tempoary Board of Health being set up in 1831
  • advised local government areas to set up their own boards of health
  • all infected stuff fumigated
  • people with cholera put into qurantine
  • central gov. was, for the first time, recognising that cleanliness is necessary in public health

Beliefs about 'cures'

  • contagionist theory - spread by contact with cholera victims
  • miasma theory - breathed in from infected air
  • herbal remedies; wine, vinegar, camphor, mustard, pepper, garlic and crushed beetles
  • patent medicines
  • prayer
