Health and Safety


  • check how quickly a piece of fabric catches fire from a small flame
  • relevant to: Children's nightwear, soft furnishing, upholstery, stage costumes, drapery, soft toys


  • small parts should be rigorously tested to see if they come off a product easily
  • fur and long pile fabrics should also be tested
  • toys for young children

Allergic reaction

  • fur and fur fabrics may give allergic or asthmatic reactions
  • dyes also cause reaction

Quality testing


  • preventing heat loss
  • relevant to: cold weather clothing, bedding

Stain resistance

  • resist common stains (e.g.tea or coffee)
  • relevant to: upholstery and carpets


  • will product lose its shape, shrink or lose colour
  • relevant to: children's clothing, evening gowns etc


  • how much water can be taken in by the product (mostly concerns fabric) without a wet touch
  • relevant to: nightwear, sportswear, underwear and bedding

Abrasion (durability) 

  • how hard wearing a product/fabric is
  • important for knees and elbow areas of clothing for children

Tensile strenghth

  • stretch of fabric, verify if product will return to its original shape
  • relevant to: climbers rope, rope ladders, tights, knitwear 


  • whether dyes wash out or fade easily/quickly
  • relevant to: clothing and furnishing fabrics


  • light rain will be repelled (not for heavy rain) 
  • relevant to anoraks and jackets


  • no rain/water penetrates through the fabric
  • relevant to: heavy duty raincoats, tents, some sportswear
