Four Common Gas Test

- Chlorine - it will bleach damp litmus paper, adn turn it from blue to white - if you use blue litmus paper, it may turn red briefly because the solution of chlorine is acidic

- Oxygen - If you put a glowing splint inside a test tueb containing oxygen, it will relight the glowing splint

- Carbon Dioxide - bubbling carbon dioxide through and aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (limewater) causes the solution to turn cloudy - you can also shake carbon dioxide with the limewater

- Hydrogen - if you hold a burning slpint at the open end of a test tube contatining hydrogen, you will get a 'squeaky pop' - noise comes from hydrogen burnign quickly in the oxygen in the air to form water
