WHAT IS POLITICS

Politcs is problem sovling peacfully (Can involve force)

People orginise lives depending on whether people good/bad:

Good = people are trustworthy/make fair decisions/agree to obey if dont like law.

Bad = need strict rules to keep under control!

Some leaders force to obey w/o consent = DICTATORSHIP

UK = electorate can elect party through peaceful ELECTIONS (at least every 5 years)

WHAT IS POWER

ability to make someone do something / achieve a desired outcome

can use force/COERCION or MANIPULATION or PERSUASION

some people have power through a role. e.g. a policeman

Power is used in effective politics. Politicians use persuasive power (b/c they want to be elceted next time)

Politicians can use law agains people who dont co-op

WHAT IS AUTHOIRTY

Legit power (allow others to have power by agreement)

3 sources of authority:

  • TRADITIONAL institution has power for a long time i.e monarchy or HoC
  • CHARISMATIC give authority becuase strong strong character/personailty
  • LEGAL-RATIONAL authority in a particular role i.e Prime Minister

Electorate bestow authority on representatives. (this is controlled by voting)

Difficult to keep power in democracy without authority. (leader with no authority is likely to be removed)
