Ambulances, fire engines and army were sent to rescue survivors. Cranes were used to remove rubble. Free mobile phones were provided to communicate. Money was provided by government to pay rent, gas and electricity bills were suspended. Long-Term Responses New settlements for 20,000 people. Most of city had been re-built. 2 of 4 Kashmir Case Study Date: 8th October 2005 Size: 7.6 Primary Effects 80,000 deaths Tens of thousands injured 3 million homeless. Water, electricity pipelines were broken. Secondary Effects Landslides buried buildings and people. diseases spread due to little clean water. 3 of 4 Kashmir Case Study #2 Immediate Responses Internatioanl aid was given. Help didnt reach areas for days or weeks. Tents, blankets and medical supplies were distrubited some didnt recieve it until a month later. Long-Term Responses 40,000 relocated to new settlements. Aid was given to rebuild schools and homes. 3 years later, people were still living in temporary tents. 10 years later, some schools still not built. 4 of 4
