TB part 1

2010 distribution of bTB in GB- mainly Southwest/west midlands

'Fieldwork’ – in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus groups, questionnaires

Veterinary ethnography = vet science + social science

fluid mobility- infecting or not

bTB moves erratically and unpredictably bTB is no longer feared as a human health threat bTB confuses - a vague imaginary, hiding from view Why control? Zoonosis, legislative requirement, export trade of live animals meat and milk, economic impact if not controlled

1 of 4

Modern day zoonotic threat

1999- siblings in Gloucester England infected. Infected cattle present- the same strain

2005- rep of ireland. 5/6 family members drinking raw milk TB positive. 26 reactor cattle

2007- 6 cases in midlands, social links but no farm links

2008-SW vet nurse and dog, same strain

Modes of transmission- inhalation, close contact(cattle/badgers-only few organisms needed)

Ingestion- feed/pasture/milk

congenital, bite wounds

Risk factors- increased herd size, animal movement, increased stocking density, neighbouring infected farms, badger presence

2 of 4

Barriers to eradication

Husbandry systems

high stocking density, multiple farm holdings-contiguous herds, cattle movement, biosecurity, maize silage

2002- >200 cattle herd incidence %= over 30%, herd size 10: 10% or less

Tuberculing test limitations

comparative skin test, sensitivity 68-95% false negatives, specificity 96-99%

Nature of the disease- usually no clinical signs, latency, variable inter and inta herd transmission, underestimated?

badgers are a wildlife vector- disease persists in social groups, control hugely controversial. direct contact at pasture, enter cattle housing at night, latrines on field boundaries, dead badgers. earthworms disseminate M.Bovis from cattle dung

future- improve diagnostics, financial restraints, vaccination?

Social science of TB

-people are an important factor in animal health

-need veterinary and social science need to work together
