Strange Situation

AO1: 8 episodes assessing the infants behaviour to different scenarios i.e when left alone with a stranger/when left alone in the room. Observations every 15 seconds. FIndings: 66% securely attached (TypeB), 22% insecure avoidant (TypeA), 12% insecure resistant (TypeC)

Type B: easy to soothe for some, moderate stranger anxiety, enthusiastic at reunion

Type A: low stranger anxiety, indifferent separation anxiety, avoids contact at reunion

Type C: high stranger anxiety, distressed at separation, seeks and rejects upon reunion

AO3: Another type of attachment (TypeD)- Main and Solomon analysed over 200 video tapes of strange situation and found insecure disorganised because some infants don't have a consistent type of attachment. They show very strong attachment suddenly followed by avoidance or being fearful to their caregiver. Van Izjendoorn et al found 15% Type D.

Observations had high reliability- Good inter-observer reliability, Ainsowrth et al found almost perfect agreement when rating exploratory behaviour with .94 agreement rating between observers. Observations can be accepted as being reliable.

Applied to the real world- Cooper et al teachs caregivers to better understand their infants' distress signals and to increase their understanding of what it feels like to be anxious. Project showed decrease in caregivers labelled as disordered (60%-15%) and increase in securely attached infants (32%-40%). Research can be used to improve children's lives which is a strength.
