Stem Cells and Therapeutic Cloning

DEFINITION:

- an undifferentiated cell of a multicellular organism which is capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EMBRYONIC AND ADULT STEM CELLS:

Embryonic stem cells can become all cell types of the body because they are pluripotent. Adult stem cells are thought to be limited to differentiating into different cell types of their tissue of origin.Embryonic stem cells can be grown relatively easily in culture.

WHAT IS DIFFERENTATION:

- the process by which cells, tissue, and organs acquire specialized features, especially during embryonic development.

Stem Cells and Therapeutic Cloning

THERAPEUTIC CLONING:

- What you will need:

  • Mimi : mouse to clone, Megdo : egg cell donor, Momi : surrogate mother to grow Mimi clone.
  • Microscope
  • Petri dish
  • Sharp Pipette
  • Plunt Pipette
  • Chemical to stimulate cell division

- Steps

  • Isolate donor cells from Mimi and Megdo
  • Remove and disgard the nucleus from the egg cell
  • Transfer the somatic cell nucleus inti the enucleated egg cell.
  • Stimulate cell division
  • Implant the embryo into Momi, the surrogate mother and then deliever the baby clone of Mimi.
