Sporting Heroes

For WJEC History spec. B, you need a few sporting heroes that you can talk about, and their acheivements.

Tanni Grey-Thompson

A disabled athlete, with spina-bifida. She has won 16 medals in the paralympic games, which makes her one of the most successful paralympic athletes. 

  • Won the award for best Welsh female sports personality of the last 25 years
  • At the 1992 Barcelona paralympics, she won 4 gold medals, and broke 3 world records
  • Won more gold medals in the 1995 World Championships
  • She is now a Dame, and works as a television presenter

John Charles

A Welsh footballl player.

  • Became the youngest ever Welsh international football player aged 18, in 1950
  • He scored 93 goals in 155 games
  • Played for Juventus, and Leeds United

Len Hutton

An English cricket player.

  • Remembered as one of England's greatest ever batsmen
  • Scored 364 in a test match against Australia in 1938
  • After WW2, he was made captain again in the 1953 Ashes, where they won
  • He was knighted by the Queen, and is one of the few cricketers to receive this honour.

Kelly Holmes

A British runner, who originally trained to be a P.E. teacher with the army.

  • Won double Gold at the 2004 Olympic Games
  • BBC sports personality of the year
  • Numerous World Records
  • Many medals at Commonwealth and European Championships
  • Now a Dame
