What is a puppy farm?

According to the British kennel club a puppy farmer is defined as a high volume breeder who breeds puppies with little or no regard for the health and welfare of the puppies or their parents. These puppy farms often keep both puppies and their parents in extremely cramped conditions. The parents of the puppies are often forced to breed and give birth continuously for the duration of their lifetime. Over breeding of dogs not only impacts the health of the parents but it also results in numerous health conditions in the puppies. Puppies brought from puppy farms also commonly suffer with psychological and behavioural issues as they haven’t been exposed to a normal home environment.

How people can prevent buying from a puppy farm

Buyers looking to purchase a puppy can do a number of different things to insure they do not purchase a puppy farmed dog, as the more we purchase from puppy farmers the more the puppy farming trade gets bigger and the more money is made from it. When buying a puppy people should always try and buy from an assured breeder, they should always ask to see the puppies mother and they should ask to see the parent’s health records. Many dogs and puppies nowadays are sold on online sites such as pets4homes, eBay, gumtree and preloved, this may be tempting for buyers to purchase from these sites as it is a quick and easy purchase, however these dogs often come from bad homes and conditions and buy purchasing these dogs you are giving money to the people who mistreat the dogs.

Introduction

If you ask me, all forms of puppy farms in the UK should be made illegal. Firstly, I’m going to talk about what actually is a puppy farm, I am then going to follow with how people can prevent buying from puppy farms, I’m then going to go on to talk about the current UK laws and legislations regarding puppy farms, then I’m going to conclude by talking about how I believe puppy farms can be stopped.

Statistics

According to the UK kennel club puppies bred from puppy farms are much more likely to suffer from preventable illnesses, such as infectious diseases, chronic inherited diseases, behavioural issues and an overall shorter life spans. There are also big issues with dogs being sold from pet shops, despite only 2% of pet shops selling dogs around the UK, it is reported that out of the 9 million dogs in the UK 16% were brought from a pet shop, which equates to 1.5 million dogs. This is a problem as most dogs sold in pet shops are supplied from puppy

Current laws and legislations

Currently in the UK the breeding of dogs act 1973 is in place, the purpose of this act was so that puppy farming could be tackled by local authorities through inspections, however local authorities lack the resources and expertise to properly address poor breeding, the current guidelines on selling puppies in pet shops are unclear.

How we can end puppy farms

We can end all forms of puppy farms, by updating the current animal welfare act to prohibit the sale of puppies from any form of establishment or pet shop. By creating a greater awareness of what puppy farms are, we can also educate people on what they are and the do’s and don’ts when buying a puppy such as only buying a puppy from a registered assured breeder or animal shelter. To conclude I firmly believe the less people who buy puppies from these puppy farms the less the demand for puppy farms to keep mass producing puppies, which will eventually cause these inhumane establishments to be stopped.

Conclusion

To conclude, i believe that all forms of puppy farms or establsihments  should be made illegal. As they as mass producing dogs in inhumane conditions all for profit and making money. By tackling current laws and legislations and creating a greater nationwide awarness of what it is i firmly believe all forms of puppy farming can be made illegal.
