Treason Act Repealed

1547

Reversed the 6 Articles Act (Catholic)

Less harsh (people could discuss religion)

It was still treason to state Edward was NOT the Head of the Church

Prayer Book

Was a 'middle-ground' (meant that nobody was satisfied!)

Protestant:

  • Services were in English
  • No transubstantiation/sacrifices

Catholic:

  • Meaning of the Eucharist was ambiguous
  • Vestments were still allowed (Northumberland banned them!)
  • Gardiner said it was acceptable

Unpopular!

  • Western 'Prayer Book' Rebellion
  • Cranmer had to publish a 'Book of Homilies'
