Cultural Deprivation

These include class differences in norms and values acquired through socialization, attitudes to education, speech patterns, etc.

  • A number of sociologists have argued that values and attitudes and aspiratons of Parents have an important effect on their childens education. It is said to be that working class famlies have less value for education than middle class parents.
  • This has a negative effect on working class students in terms of their poorer performance.
  • Bernstein- distiguished between the elaborate and restricted speech codes.
  • Eleborate codes are used in education- such as textbooks uses in school becaue they know what their audience is.
  • Bernsitein- Working class children tend to use restricted codes which is less analystic and more descriptive. It is particularistic- it assumes that the listeners shares the the particular meaning that the speaker holds.- So they do not spell them out.
  • Middle class students use the elaborate code because its more analystic and can be spelt out . This is what is used in the education syestem giving a higher edge to middle class students over working class students. this could explain the class gap.

However...

Keddie described this cultural deprevation as a myth and expalins the victim blaming explaination. She expalins that working class students are culturally different not depreived.- Thats why they fail with the education system.

Material Deprevation

Refers to the lack of physical resources such as money, room and equiptment- which have an effect on educational achievement of working class children.

  • Smith and Noble- Defined the influence class difference in educational achievement. For example, having money allows the parents to provide books and educational material , housing space and a healthy lofestyle amoungst other things that will help them get the best education achievement.
  • Research from Warwick University that many students face selection or admision by mortagage- where wealthier famlies can move to better areas with greater educational achievement, leaving the not so good schools for the working class students.
