What do sociologists do?

  • They study people in their daily lives. 
  • The process of studying people and how they behave is knows as research.
  • The big issues they study may include: inequality, racism and sexism.
  • The aim of sociology is to understand people and what they do and how they think.

What is culture?

  • Culture is the way of life of a group of people
  • Cultural diversity is the fact that different groups of people may have different ways of living
  • Cultural relativity is the idea that what is normal to one culture may be strange to another
  • Cultural universal is the idea that some social behaviours can be found in all cultures

Formal Sanction

this is a punshiment thats unofficial (not that serious)

What is socialisation?

  • The process of learning the expected behaviour for your culture is socialisation.
  • Primary socialisation takes place in the home and by the family
  • Secondary socialisation takes place out of the home, in the wider society.
  • Accidental socialisation is known as informal socialisation
  • The deliberate attempt to change a person to fit into a new situation is known as formal socialisation
