Socialization

SOCIALISATION is the process through which we learn the culture, values and norms of our society/ group we are born into. Socialisation prepares us for our roles in society.

A ROLE refers to the pattern of expected behaviour of people who occupy a certain position in society.

Primary and Secondry Socialization

PRIMARY SOCIALISATION

Learning during early childhood – babies + infants – when we learn basic behaviour patterns, language and skills.

Groups or institutions responsible for primary socialisation.

Family/Parents

SECONDARY SOCIALISATION

Learning later on in childhood and throughout adult life. We learn society’s norms and values.

AGENCIES OF SECONDARY SOCIALISATION

Groups or institutions responsible for secondary socialisation.

Mass media/Peer groups/Workplaces/Schools/Religion
