Exploitation thesis: Created by Marxist feminists who state that modernisation imposes an exploitative global system of capitalism on developing societies.
Transnational companies have relocated to export processing zones to gain cheap labour etc.
90% of workers in factories are women who are employed for being cheap, docile and pliable. Low wages mean more can be produced for less and women put up with conditions because they see no other alternative.
Leonard argues that these companies aim to exploit female labour rather than to provide for women. However the wages earned are better than those in rural living and unwanted prospects such as arranged marriage are avoided.
Foster Carter however argues that new forms of exploitation replace old problems; for example submission to long hours and low wages.
