SIX WRITING FORMATS

REPORTS

  • VERY FORMAL
  • It involves explaining your finidings
  • Pretend you have carried out an investigation
  • Start with a clear and concise title 'A report on_____ wanted by______. Reported by______
  • Write an introductory paragraph explaining WHY research has been carried out, HOW it has been carried out and WHO the information is for
  • Mention -areas examined include_____________
  • Explain your findings (paragraphs about the areas examined), use subtitles to divide the sections, include both positives and negatives to prevent from being overly biased
  • Then make suggestions
  • Finally, write a positive and brief conclusion saying about how things will improve with the suggestions
  • Finish with- 'reported by________________-June 2017'

ARTICLES

  • Short and sweet headline- try and use a clever play on words
  • Follow this by a strapline 
  • Follow this by 'reported by our ______'
  • Start with an introductory paragraph summarising the content
  • Then explain what you are reporting in as much detail as poss. and have at least 4 paragraph ideas
  • Use subheadings to divide up the article
  • Finish by summing up the purpose of the entire article and make the intention obvious & what you want the reader to do
  • Finish by saying 'Written by__________'

FORMAL LETTERS

  • Write your address top right with the full date below
  • Then write recipients address on the left, lower than yours
  • Write the formal salutation just below their address
  • Begin with a concise summary of the purpose of the letter
  • Aim for at least 3 seperate paragraph ideas
  • Finish with a line summing it all up 
  • If you don't know their name- 'yours faithfully'
  • If you do know their name- 'yours sincerely'
  • End by signing your name and then printing it below

LEAFLETS

  • they need a clear structure to break up the information given
  • the main aim is usually to inform
  • A simple but effective title
  • A short, introductory paragraph is needed. Maybe end with a rhetorical question
  • Use subheadings to organise the points and summarise the message
  • Bullet points show that it isn't just an article
  • Use boxes for pictures
  • End with a breif summary telling the reader where they can find additional information

REVIEWS

  • A big and bold title- with the title of the book/film/game etc. on
  • Write a brief summary of what it is abbout
  • Follow this by saying 'review written by___________'
  • Write the review addressing:- genre, audience, summary, excellent performances, other versions, opinions, incredible scenes
  • Include humor and write in 1st person!
  • Give it a rating out of five (create own symbol!)
  • Keep the language sophisticated and make sure that it is still informative

SPEECHES

  • have a dramatic and emotional impact to ensure that the audience understand your perspective and stance
  • Start by thanking your audience for being there- maybe adressing them like 'Ladies and gentlemen, I am here today to defend the poposal to_________'
  • Explain the purpose of the speech and give a personal connection
  • Come up with as many points and arguments as possible and use as many persuasive language devices as possible
  • Finish by summarising the speech and give the audience (possibly) a requirement
  • Ask the audience if they would like to pick up a leaflet to get more details & wish them well for their day
