Sex, celibacy and contraception

Christian beliefs 

  • Sex is a gift from God
  • Contraceptives are acceptable to many Christians as long as both parties agree
  • Adultery is forbidden in the 10 commandments

In Roman Catholic Curches

  • priests are expected to be celibate
  • artifical methods of contraception aren't allowed
  • sex should always allow the possibility of new life
  • Natural methods of contraception are allowed e.g family planning

Muslim beliefs

  • sex should only happen within marriage
  • sex is considered an act of worship
  • short term contraception is accepted, long term like vasectomy is forbidden
  • Promises of faithfullness are usually made in the wedding ceremony 'have nothing to do with adultry'
