The food groups

There are 5 main food groups and these are...

Fruit and Vegetables- Tomatos, apples etc.

Digestion

The digestive system is one of four main systems in the body.

The food you eat or mixed with digestive juices.

Digestion begins in the mouth, chewing the food, and ends in the small intestine.

The digestive system is a series of hollow organs connected by a long, twisted tube from the mouth to the anus.

Digesting carbs, protein and fat

Enzymes increase the rates of chemical reactions.

The substances at the beginning of the digestion process (called substrates) are broken into smaller substances called the products. We can digest carbohydrates, proteins and fats with enzymes. They break up the structure of the carbohydrates, proteins and fats using their active sites, designed to break up the chain of carbohydrates, proteins or fats.

Carbohydrate (substrate) = broken down by amylase* > makes glucose (product)

Protein = broken down by protease* > amino acid

Fat = broken down by lipase* > fatty acids/glycerol

*all types of enzymes
