helps with stomach upsets.
Pharmaceuticals
medical chemicals.
Pharmacist
people who work in a chemist shop.
Food additives
things added to food.
Preservatives
added to food to make it last longer - have a longer use by date.
Colourings
added to food to make it a certain colour e.g coloured icing on cakes.
Flavourings
added to food to give them a stronger certain flavour e.g. smokey bacon crisps.
Emulisifiers
mix oil and water e.g ice-cream, mayonaise.
normally oil and water separate and dont mix. the Emulisifier makes them mix together.
Multinational companies
shell, esso - big companies that are across different countries.
Synthetic
man-made.
raw materials
starting materials used to make a product. usually natural materials e.g coal, cotton, wood etc.
bulk chemicals
bulk - lots & lots/ large amounts.
the chemical industry make some chemicals on a scale of thousands of tones per year e.g sulfuric acid, chlorine.
fine chemicals
chemicals made in smaller amounts e.g drugs and pesticides.
Speciality chemicals
chemicals made in small amounts that are used by other people/manufacturers for a certain purpose.
plant
the part of a chemical works which makes a chemical.
Chemical industry
changes raw materials into pure chemicals. e.g acids, alkalis, salts.
Sustainable
it can carry on over a long period of time without harming the environment.
How can the chemical industry become sustainable?
- develop renewable resources
- make efficient use of energy
- reduce waste.
