General Notes

  • 1797-1828
  • 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones (in D), timpani, 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 contrabasso
  • Sonata form (Exposition, Development, Recapitulation.)
  • Development has dominant preparation through dominant pedal to get back to the tonic
  • development also makes use of rhythmic diminution
  • Exposition is repeated
  • Subject 2 - used antiphonally at bar 74
  • Transition moment from Subject 1 to Subject 2 achieved through pivot note in horns
  • Bar 170 - whole orchestra joins in for repetition of the introductory theme - BIG MOMENT.
