Geostationary Satellites

  • Orbit the earth high above the equator, moving at the same rate as the earth
  • This means that they always stay above the same point on earth
  • Take 24 hours (obviously) to complete an orbit

Uses:

  • Communications satellites

Low Polar Orbits

  • Move continuously ove the North and South Poles whilst the earth spins
  • Much closer to the earth's surface
  • Scan the earth several times each day

Uses:

  • Monitoring satellites- used to take shots of the environment to monitor things such as the weather and climate change
  • Secret information satellites- collecting information on other countries
